Hi 2002 Listers,
The STILT remains in the same location. It rested in the same position from
dawn to well after 10:00 this morning. It then started feeding again.
Several birders have come today in order to start their 2002 lists with a
bang.
More Goldeneye and Bufflehead are showing up on the St. Clair River. I also
had one GADWALL with Mallards at Marshy Creek Park which is a couple of
kilometres north of Port Lambton. One PEREGRINE FALCON was visible on the
Detroit Edison Power Plant north of Sombra. View from Terra Industries on
the Canadian side.

Directions: From highway 40 which runs between Sarnia and Chatham, find
Wallaceburg. Take it (40) west from 'Burg and follow it to where it turns
north. Head two concessions north to Langstaff Line and turn left.
Follow this a few kilometres to its west end and you are at the Snye River.
Turn right onto St. Clair Parkway (RD 33) and go about 1 km or less. You
are along the Snye and Walpole Island is on the far shore.
OR: From highway 40 north (Sarnia), follow
south to Port Lambton turnoff (Rd. 1) and follow to the village. Turn left
at the St. Clair River and follow 2.5 concessions south, a little past the
Chatham-Kent border sign. You will see a sign for Snye-View Orchards (on
left), and it is a little south of there. (Or follow St. Clair Parkway all
the way south from Sarnia to just past the Chatham-Kent border). The bird
is on the Walpole side of the river (west), feeding along the edge. It may
hide
behind cattails at times.
Happy New Year!

Birders,
Happy New Year!!
This afternoon a Great Blue Heron was observed along Longwoods Road, just
west of the 402 at Delaware.
Directions: Longwoods Road west from Delaware towards Melbourne. Just
before going up the hill, there is a small creek on the right side (north)
of Longwoods Rd. A road mileage sign for Thamesville, Windsor, marks the
spot.

Also an immature Bald Eagle was observed as it hunted along the Thames
River. The best site for viewing is from Adelaide Rd.
Directions: Delaware to Adelaide Rd., go north on Adelaide Road. As you go
up the hill, you will notice an open field on the right(north) side used by
local fisherman for parking. You may drive in and park. I have seen this
eagle on numerous occasions as he hunts along the Thames, generally mid to
late afternoon is the best!

Subject: Black-crowned Night Heron & Green-winged Teal - NW Mississauga

Sender: ontbirds-owner@hwcn.org

A foray into our local patch to start off our year's list turned up a
few birds that may be of interest:

BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON - 2 immatures - perched in trees (in the sun)
beside Lake Wabukayne
GREEN-WINGED TEAL - 1 male - associating with Mallards, Am. Black Ducks
and Canada Geese in Lake Wabukayne

Directions to Lake Wabukayne:

Exit Hwy 401 at Mississauga Road, proceed south to Brittania Road (about
2km). Turn right (east) onto Brittania and then turn right (north) at
the next light - Glen Erin Boulevard. A few hundred metres north on your
right you will see a sign for Lake Wabukayne but for better access you
should proceed a few metres further north and make a right turn (east)
onto Inlake and drive to the vicinity of the church. Please do NOT use
the church parking lot - park on the street (Inlake). You can walk in
along the paved path to the viewing platform on the south side of the
lake. The lake is mostly frozen now, but the open water should have
plenty of Mallards with a few American Black Ducks and one male
Green-winged Teal. Scan the trees and lake edges for the Night Herons.
Also be on the lookout for a Belted Kingfisher. We didn't see it today
but it was there during the Christmas count on December 15th. The Teal
and Night Herons were observed at around noon today.

Note that this area is only a few kilometres from the Townsend's
Solitaire location. Unfortunately we had no luck locating that bird
today. Did anybody else find it?

Other sightings today:

At Lakeside Park (Lake Ontario waterfront just east of the south end of
Winston Churchill Boulevard):

PEREGRINE FALCON - scaring the wits out of the ducks by making a low
pass over the lake!
AMERICAN WIGEON - fewer than the 30+ at CBC time but still several
present
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER - at least 10 mixed in amongst Goldeneyes and
Bufflehead

1 Jan 2002

Today I saw the female Varied Thrush at Ted Gardner's feeder in Bracebridge
at 120 Meadow Heights Dr.

I arrived just after 2 p.m. and the bird appeared from 3:00 to 3:05 p.m. but
it spent most of its time fairly well hidden in the spruce trees near the
back of the yard and beneath the shed on a tiny patch of snow-free ground.
Apparently this was the first time the bird was seen today, despite a
patient morning vigil by some birders from Hamilton.

Directions: Bracebridge is a 2 hr drive north of Toronto. From the south,
take the first Bracebridge exit off Hwy 11, follow Muskoka Rd 118 west into
Bracebridge. At Tim Hortons turn right on Monck Rd. At the next traffic
light turn left on Muskoka Rd 4/Manitoba street. Go north to a few kms to
Meadow Heights Dr on the left. Follow Meadow Heights Dr to #120 which is on
the loop at the end where it intersects Brian Rd.

>From the north exit Hwy 11 at Taylor Rd, follow Taylor Rd to Manitoba St.
Turn right and continue to Meadow Heights.

Hello Ontbirders,

At 0400 hours this morning a GREAT HORNED OWL was hooting behind our
property by the Graham Creek.

At 1600 hours this afternoon I counted 10,000 CANADA GEESE in the Whitby
Harbor, on the ice, with 1 TRUMPETER SWAN with tag # 137 and 1 MUTE SWAN in
the open water. Some of you have been asking me whether the TRUMPETER SWAN
in Newcastle had a tag but I was not able to see it.

Dirctions: Take Mill St. S. exit from Highway # 401 till about 100 m. from
the lake. For the Whitby Harbor take the Highway # 12 south exit from the
401 till about a km. from the lake.

The New Year has been brought in with several good birds reported in the
Sault Ste. Marie area. An adult Western Meadowlark was found on a porch
at 226 River Rd. This bird frequented that address as well as 234 River
Rd. for the afternoon of January 21st. After posing for photographs it
dined on a handful of crickets. This bird may survive for a while if it
continues to be fed.

At the Sault canal, today, the highlights seen were 1 adult Bald Eagle,
1 Cooper’s Hawk, 1 American Kestrel, 1 Northern Shrike, 2 first winter
Iceland Gulls, 5 immature Glaucous Gulls, 1 first winter Great
Black-backed Gull and a very late Bonaparte’s Gull. The Bonaparte’s was
last seen flying southeast towards the Edison Sault Power plant on the
Michigan side of the St. Mary’s River. At least 2 Long-tailed Ducks can
be seen amongst the 50 Common Goldeneyes in the headrace of the Sault
locks.

Several small flocks of Pine Grosbeak have been seen at the Station Mall
and Queen St. and Kerr Dr. feeding on American Ash and hedge maples. On
December 30th, a male Northern Cardinal visited a feeder on Fairmont Dr.
Two more are visiting a feeder on Parkdale Dr. At that same feeder a
Boreal Chickadee was seen on the 29th. Another Boreal Chickadee is
coming to a feeder on 4th Line at the ski trail across from Wishart
Park.

>From the Sudbury area, at the Sudbury dump, 27 Glaucous Gulls, 2 Iceland
Gulls, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 2 immature Great Black-backed
Gulls can be seen daily. An immature light phase Gyrfalcon was also been
reported in Sudbury. The Bewick’s Wren that visited a feeder at 405 King
St. in the town of Massey, has not been seen since Christmas day.
However, there are 7 White-winged Crossbills, 5 Northern Cardinals, Pine
Grosbeaks and 34 Evening Grosbeaks making daily appearances.

Despite several attempts in Toronto, Cobourg, and Ottawa, I never did see a
Purple Sandpiper in 2001. However, this morning I got my 2002 list off to a
great start with the Purple Sandpiper in Cobourg. It was right at the end
of Darcy St, actively feeding on the rocks.

I had a few other interesting January sightings today. At the northwest
platform at Cranberry Marsh there were 5 Song Sparrows and 1 White-throated
Sparrow. A single male Ring-necked Duck was on the west side of Brock just
north of Whitby Harbour, and what appeared to be a blue-phase Snow Goose was
east of the road at the same location, almost concealed from view among the
hundreds of Canada Geese resting along the edge of the ice. (Much) further
east, there were 5 Wild Turkeys on the north side of Hwy 401 at km 650.

Good birding!

Directions:
Cobourg: Exit Hwy 401 at Division St (exit 474), head south to King St (Hwy
2), turn left (east) and after a short distance turn right on Darcy and
proceed south to the lake. Cobourg Harbour is just to the west (return to
Division via King, and continue south to the lake), but it was unremarkable
this morning.

Whitby: Exit Hwy 401 at Brock St (exit 410), continue south for a couple of
kilometres to where the road crosses a partly open channel; this is where
the Ring-necked Duck & Snow Goose were. An overlook of Whitby Harbour is
just a bit further along the road, but the only birds there today were the
usual 3 gull species, and a lone male Common Merganser.

Cranberry Marsh: From Whitby Harbour, return north on Brock to Victoria,
turn left (west) and proceed a few km to Halls Road; turn left and continue
to the parking area along the road.

DIRECTIONS to the Solitaire:
>From I-190 in Buffalo or Niagara Falls, proceed north to Rt. 104 eastbound.
Ontario birders should cross at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and
immediately exit after customs, following the signs to Rt 104 eastbound.
Stay on Rt 104 eastbound when you reach the Village of Lewiston at the
bottom of the escarpment - you have to exit the limited access highway.
Proceed east about 4 miles to Dickersonville Road (there is a church on the
southeast corner) and turn right (south). In about 1/4 mile, the road will
bend to the left and soon will pass Blacknose Spring Road, which comes down
off of the escarpment on your right. Proceed another 150 yards or so to the
first road (a dirt lane) on your right. It is across the street from the
second house on your left. Pull over here without blocking the lane. There
is an old sign saying, "Private Property No Trespassing" but I have it on
good authority that the sign is intended for vehicles only. This is county
parkland. Walk down the lane and start looking for the Solitaire right away
as the habitat is good. As you walk, there will be water on both sides of
the road. When the water begins to widen on your right, after about 100
yards, is where I first saw the bird on the right side. This spot also
gives a good view over the water to your left. The bird has been seen
eating red berries here as well. A little further down the
lane, the water ends on both sides of the road and there is a small
inconspicuous path on your right. We had excellent looks at the bird from
this path once. Several times, the bird was in the small orchard that is
just a few more yards down the lane on your
left. The far (east) end seems to be the best spot.

Tony Bigg and I decided to work the Lake Ontario shoreline today from
Cobourg to Pickering. Highlights included:

Cobourg Harbour - Am. Coot (1)

Foot of Darcy St. - Purple Sandpiper (1) and about 1/2 km. east - Dunlin (1)

west of Port Hope on Lakeshore Road - N. Shrike (1)

Newcastle/Bond Head - Snow (Blue) Goose (1)

Newcastle - M. Lise feeder - Hoary Redpoll (1), WW Crossbill (4), White-thr
Sparrow (2)

Thickson's Woods - Flicker (1), Carolina Wren (2)

401 @ Thickson's Woods - Sharp-shinned Hawk (1)

Whitby Harbour - N. Pintail (1), Snow (Blue) Goose (1)

Lynde Shores - Red-winged Blackbird (33), Robin (1)

Cranberry Marsh - Song Sparrow (8)

Hydro Marsh - Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1), Cooper's hawk (1)

Directions:

Cobourg Harbour: exit 401 at Division St and travel south until you hit the
lake. To reach Darcy St. backtrack to Hwy 2 and go east to Darcy and then
south to the lake.

Newcastle/Bond Head: exit 401 at Newcastle/Bond Head exit and go south to a
"Y" intersection; take left fork and then go south to the lake. The goose
rests on the ice with the Canada's. The Lise feeder is north of the harbour
about 1/2 km on the west side. Pls respect his request to stay off property
and park on east side of road.

Thickson's Woods: exit 401 at Thickson's Rd and go south to the lake. Woods
are on the east side behind the cottages.

Whitby Harbour: exit 401 at Brock St and go south to the lake to see the
harbour proper and to the place where the creek crosses under the road to
see the Blue Goose.

Lynde Shores: from the 401 and Brock St. go south to the first lights
[Victoria] and then west until you cross a large marsh - Conservation area
is on your left.

Cranberry Marsh: continue west on Victoria from Lynde Shores to Hall's Rd
and then go south the the marsh.

Hydro Marsh: to get to the exact location where the sapsucker was feeding,
exit 401 at Brock Road [not Street] in Pickering go south to Bayly and then
west to Pickering Beach Rd and then south to Alyssum St. and then west to
Luflin and south on Luflin to Colmar and finally go west on Colmar to
Alderwood Place where there is a small parkette. Walk into the parkette and
in the northeast corner are a series of feeders and lots of birds. The
sapsucker was right beside the feeders and the first house [no number as it
was a backyard]. There is also a Mockingbird haunting this area.

Good birding.

A triop to Amherst with friends from Australia was a great way to start the
new year. There good numbers of ROUGH-LEGGED and RED-TAILED hawks. Around
the owl woods we found one SNOWY OWL, and 2 SHORT-EARED owls. As we drove
back up Marshall 40-foot Road we spotted, what I hope was our 3rd SHORT
EARED owl, feeding on the ground. And almost at the north end of the road we
spotted the NORTHERN GOSHAWK, I would agree that this is a male. There were
also 15 HORNED LARKS beside a red barn along Front Road, the road from
Stella.
A wonderful start to a new year.

Happy new year & good BIRDING!!

Today Stan Bajurny and I were in the Rondeau Provincial Park area and along with
many good birds (actually excellent birds) we observed in one field along Kent
Bridge road (Regional Rd 15) less than 1km from the causeway onto the Rondeau
Provincial Park peninsula several flocks of Horned larks and in a large flock of
100+ birds we counted (probably undercounted) 36 Lapland Longspurs. I am sure
that more are around as we observed several other flocks of "Larks" in the area
that were too far off or too skittish to afford us good views.

Happy New Year birders,

A pleasant (albeit chilly) 1 January sortie along the waterfront
produced a juvenile black-crowned night heron at Pickering Beach (the
foot of Liverpool road), first perched in a tree by the parking lot
then, having circled nicely around to give us a good view, staning on
the ice in front of the cat-tails over beneath the windmill.
There was an assortment of buffleheads, c. mergansers, goldeneye, and
scaup within binocular range where the channel exits from Frenchmans
bay.

Further on, off Hall's road, there was a very nice rough-legged hawk,
perched and flying, and a song sparrow at the end of the South
viewpoint.
In Lynde Shores CA, there were the usual 'human-acclimatized' birds,
plus brown creeper, a first-year male RED-WINGED BB, an A. ROBIN,
another song sparrow, and a number of tree sparrows, a kestrel, and a
red-tailed hawk overhead.

Directions:
These sites are all listed in Goodwin, and can most easily be accessed
from Brock Road off the 401 S to Bayly. Liverpool is W , and Hall's Rd
is E of this intersection.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

As you can see from the subject, both our peregrines are still here, on the
Coats Building at Tunney's Pasture. What a great way for the start of my
year!

Other birds of note, at least for me, were a Snowy Owl who flew right over
my car on Brownlee Rd off Eagleson, a tree with about 50 Snow Buntings in
the same area, a Northern Shrike beside Fallowfield at the "S" curve between
Cedarview and Moodie, 4 Red-tailed Hawks and 6 Rough-legged Hawks south of
the airport, and 3 beautiful (though uncountable) white domestic ducks in
with a hundred or so Mallards by Dickinson Square in Manotick.

I'm off to Toronto tomorrow, so we'll see.........

Cheers, Eve

Directions:

Coats Building: bounded by Parkdale, Scott and Holland, Parkdale runs from
the Western Parkway along the Ottawa River and Carling Ave near the Civic
Hospital.

Brownlee runs between Eagleson and Shea, and is south of Fallowfield Rd.
Eagleson can be found off the 417 west of Ottawa, and runs south.

The "S" curve of Fallowfield is east of the above area. It is just east of
the exit from the 416 and is between Moodie and Cedarview.

Dickinson Square is just east of the main street of Manotick. There is a
dam on the Rideau River and the waters below it are always open, providing a
haven for ducks, mostly Mallards. Manotick can be reached by taking
Bankfield east from the 416, or Road 8 (Mitch Owens) from the River Rd.

Not sure what happened to my original post ... so here it is again.

Cranberry Marsh: continue west on Victoria from Lynde Shores to Hall's Rd
and then go south the marsh.

Happy New Year Ontbirders:

Apologies for the late post, but this is my first opportunity to send a
message.

Sean and Jim Macey and I saw the Townsend's Solitaire in the vicinity of
Plum Tree Parkette in North Mississauga yesterday. The bird was in the
backyards of the houses
east of the parkette at 7:55 AM exactly in the location described by Gary
Fowler on Dec. 29. His directions follow.

Walk about 50 feet into the parkette and look to the east for 3 tall spruce
trees, the bird perches on the top of the dead tree in the middle. An even
better look at these three trees can be had from Hickling Ct. (One street
east of the parkette).

Directions:

Happy New Year to all:

I'm new here so please excuse if I make an error. I've read the posting
rules and I will try hard to do this correct.

Jan 1/02 hubby and I decided to try and find the tufted titmouse at the
Royal Botanical Gardens/Arboretum. Well we did just that. Two beautiful
titmouse flying with dozens of chickadees and white-breasted nuthatch. I
knew we were at the outer limits of their range and never expected to see
this wonderful birds.

Spotted a red-tailed hawk perched in a tree on highway 403 driving home to
Burlington.

Sorry for the late posting- Last friday (the 28th of December), as I was driving
north on Hwy. 404 (at hwy 7), a Turkey Vulture(!) flew east to west over the
highway. Has anyone seen any TVs in the area? Isn't this kind of late to be
seeing them in the Toronto area??
Good luck to all in 2002.

Sorry for the timing of this posting. On the afternoon of the Dec 31st I
spotted a adult BALD EAGLE fling above the base of the Rideau Trail at King
st west in Kingston. I forgot due to my sighting of the Goshawk.

Sorry,

our house. the bird was there for about 10 minutes before streaming off to
the southwest.

very weird.

and the stilt was still present in the same location near walpole island. as
of 10.45am, but flew off to the west towards walpole / st. clair river.

should the eagle return, and for formalities sake, our address is 240
reedmere rd. in windsor. heading north on jefferson, turn west at riverside
drive and go 2 blocks. turn south onto reedmere and we're halfway up the
first block on the left.

Early this afternoon I checked for the female Harlequin Duck and the Common
Yellowthroat which have been reported recently near the Rideau Tennis Club,
but had no luck with either bird. However, there was a beautiful male Wood
Duck on the near shore with all the Mallards and Black Ducks, likely the
same individual which spent last winter at this location. Near the far
shore, there was a single Scaup among a dozen or so Common Goldeneye.
Probably a Greater Scaup, but I didn't get the greatest look at her, and am
therefore not 100% certain.

Good birding,

Directions: Exit Hwy 417 at Vanier Parkway and continue north to Donald St.
Turn left and drive to the small parking lot at the end of the road. The
open stretch of water isn't very large, and is easy to scan from near the
parking lot.

The Black-necked Stilt was seen today at sunrise at 7:25am, and was joined
at the same island of reeds at 8:11am by a Common Snipe. The Stilt is in the
same place as it was reported yesterday, at the roadside edge of an island
of cattails in the Snye River across from lot #30023 (see directions below).
The Stilt fed along the edge of the cattails and in the river with 4
Mallards. We left the Stilt at 9:03 am. Good luck tomorrow.

Directions:
Take 40 west from Wallaceburg and follow it to where it turns north. Head
two concessions north to Langstaff Line and turn left. Follow this road a
few kilometres to its west end and turn right onto RD 33 (St. Clair Parkway)
and go 0.9 km along the Snye River across from Walpole Island. Look for Lot
#30023 and check the island of cattails in the river just right of a sign
posted "Walpole Island".
OR:
>From highway 40 north (Sarnia) follow south to Port Lambton turnoff (Rd.1)
and follow to the village. Turn left at the St. Clair River and follow 2.5
concessions south, a little past the Chatham-Kent border sign. Go past the
Snye-View Orchards Farms and look for Lot #30023.

Finally I got out to do a little birding after a long respite/recovery from
hawk data-gathering. My introduction was to have a Cooper's Hawk greet me
outside my abode on a low shrub, seemingly waiting for an ambush into
several nearby spruce trees. This was followed by a Red-tailed Hawk atop a
pole alongside the Whitby Hospital road. The only birds I picked up as I
wended my way down Hall's Rd. were Dark-eyed Juncos, B-C Chickadees, Blue
Jays, Downy Woodpecker and White-breasted Nuthatch. For the past 3 months a
rather interesting"dominant" Gray Squirrel has held forte at the entry way
to the north pathway off Hall's Rd.--WHITE NOSE, WHITE EARS, WHITE PAWS AND
WHITE TAIL TIP clearly mark this reddish-black flippant rodent.
In the Whitby Harbour open water are 2 female and 2 male HOODED MERGANSERS
along with a number of COMMON MERGS.

There is a fine pair of Harlequin Ducks in Port Credit, Mississauga just off
of Saddington Park, a few yards west of the mouth of the Credit River.

To get there, from the QEW, take Mississauga Road southbound. Cross
Lakeshore Rd. and proceed right down to Lake St. Park in parking lot and
walk to the lake. Scan the rocks and ice, the adult male and female were
diving just offshore in the first little bay west of the mouth.

My last new bird of 2001 was a Boreal Chickadee in North Bay on the 31st.
My first new bird of 2002 was the Varied Thrush at Bracebridge today. I
stopped on my way home from South River and saw the bird at 11:25 this
morning for about 5 minutes. When it left, it flew behind the storage shed
and down the hill toward the houses on the lower portion of Meadow Heights
Dr. I drove down to look for it and found a well stocked and active feeder
behind 82 Meadow Heights Dr. I suggest people try looking in that area if
they can't find the Thrush at #120. There were also many redpolls, blue
jays, mourning doves, pine grosbeaks and evening grosbeaks at the feeders at
both locations.

from the north: take Taylor road from hwy 11 into Bracebridge. Turn right
onto Manitoba. Turn left onto Meadow Heights and follow it around to #120
on the left across from Brian St.

Please Excuse my spelling ,I am Dyslexic
thank you for your understanding.

For some reason I did not get any Ont bird post but my one on the
Warblers yesterday But thank god Carol Horner did and especially Geoff
Carpentier’s post on Cobourg to Pickering , Carol and I , re did this
trip to day to see what we could find .

At the foot of Darcy st in Cobourg we found both the Purple Sandpiper
and the Dunlin, in the same area as they wear reported yesterday if they
hadn’t moved.

In the Cobourg Harbour we re found the Hoary Redpoll it was in with 15
to 20 Com. Redpolls. also seen wear 2 A Pipits , 1 Coot and a good array
of ducks .

the only birds we saw on the Lakeshore rd from Port Hope to Newcastle
wear 1 Hairy woodpecker and 1 Red tall hawk.

We did find the Blue Snow Goose in with the Canada geese at the
Newcastle ( bond head ) harbour , but M. Lise feeders wear a bust both
times we wear their at 8:00 am and
1:30 nothing but lots of A. gold finch.

But then it was on to Thickson’s woods and WOW a gold mine , the woods
wear quite dead as we went through we found 2 Golden Crown Kinglets and
1 brown creeper , but as we went to leave we found raptor haven with 1
( large female) Kestrel , 2 N Harriers ( 1 mail ) 1 Juv . Bald Eagle and
1 red tall hawk!! 4 of these birds wear seen hunting over the soon to be
new area to the north of the woods!! And all wear seen with in 15 mints
of each other.

then it was on to Cranberry march wear we found a Sharp shin hawk , 1
Rough-legged Hawk ( light phase) and another N. Harrier and a good
number of Sparrows including tree sparrow, Song sparrow, White- Throated
sparrow and Swamp Sparrow !

Our last stop was to look for and find the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker at
Hydro Marsh witch was farley easily found drilling on trees in the back
yard’s north of the parquet . what a great second day of the new year

Hi All,

I headed out to Wellington County looking for the NORTHERN HAWK OWL, which
was easily seen as described previously (see directions below), it was on
the south side of Wellington Cty Rd 8 on the wires about 500m east of the
Perth-Wellington county line, where the road becomes Perth Line 91. Also
here were a flock of 50 SNOW BUNTINGS with 2 HORNED LARKS mixed in. In the
general area, driving some of the county roads, I saw 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS
(3 Light phase, 1 Intermediate & 2 Dark).

I then headed back to Mississauga and found the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE feeding
on crabapples right at the corner of Hickling & Vanderbilt (after about a
30min wait), see directions below. I hope the gentleman whom I met there
was able to see this bird.

On December 31, I also had 3 COMMON RAVENS in the vicinity of Palgrave C.A.,
2 were along Humber Station Road just south of Hwy 9 and 1 was mixed in with
a large flock of American Crows along Duffy's Lane just south of Hwy 9 (both
of these sideroads run generally north-south, just west of Hwy 50), north of
Bolton.

Regards & good birding,

Frank Pinilla
Richmond Hill, ON

DIRECTIONS:
Townsend's Solitaire - Plumtree Park, Mississauga - by Gary Fowler on Dec.
29 & subsequently Bruce Brydon's follow.
Walk about 50 feet into the parkette and look to the east for 3 tall spruce
trees, the bird perches on the top of the dead tree in the middle. An even
better look at these three trees can be had from Hickling Ct. (One street
east of the parkette).
>From the Hwy 401 exit at Winston Churchill Boulevard, proceed south to
Derry Road (about 2km). Turn right (west) on Derry Road and at the next
light turn left (south) onto Danton Promenade. Proceed to the end of this
short street at a T-junction with Vanderbilt Road. Directly in front of you
is the entrance to Plum Tree Park.

Northern Hawk Owl - west of Drayton, Wellington Cty - from Toronto, exit Hwy
401 at Hwy 8 north through Kitchener, follow to Hwy 86 north to Waterloo,
then follow Waterloo Rd 85 to Elmira (road becomes Waterloo Rd 21), go
through Elmira and north to Wellington Rd 17 turn right and shortly after
this turn left/west along Wellington Rd 8 through Drayton and go just past
Sideroad 6 (but before Rd 140/9). The Rough-legs were in seen along the
sideroads south of this area (around Conestoga C.A.).

It looks more and more like it's going to be an average year at best in
the Owl Woods. Into the new year, there are still only 3 SAW-WHET OWLS
regular in the woods, one in the Cedar Woods and 2 in the Pines with no
signs that the snows of the past several weeks have resulted in any
movement in or out. The result is that if you overlook one, you may not
find any.

There is still the occasional LONG-EARED OWL but most have either been
taken by the NORTHERN GOSHAWK or have moved out to safer locales. And no
sign of any movement of BOREAL, GREAT GRAY or HAWK OWLS. Still, if you
want to see either SAW-WHET or LONG-EARED OWLS, this is probably your
best bet.

Around the woods however there are lots of SNOWY OWLS and SHORT-EARED
OWLS. Lots of hawks over the whole Island especially RED-TAILED,
ROUGH-LEGGED, HARRIER and KESTREL. The NORTHERN GOSHAWK can be seen
most days at some point in or around the Owl Woods. So, a trip to the
Island will be productive as always.

Amherst Island is 16 km west of Kingston. Take exit # 593 from Highway
401, proceed south on County Road #4 (formerly Highway 133) to
Millhaven on Lake Ontario - the ferry dock is 200m west on Hwy 33 (Bath
Road). A round-trip costs $5.00. The ferry leaves every hour on the
half-hour from 6:30 am onward.

To get to the "Owl Woods" after getting off the ferry: take the first
left (east), drive 3 km along the north shore road (Front Road) to the
first southbound road called Marshall 40-foot Road (directly across the
road from the 2320 sign). Proceed 1.3 km south to the S-curve. Walk
north-east on the trails. (Beware of killer Chickadees - Bring
sunflower seeds for hand feeding if at all possible!)

The road to the Owl Woods is now closed and impassable from both ends.
Going in from the north end today, there are drifts of 4-5 feet in
height with some as much as 8 feet. The good news is that the drifts
have been packed so hard by the gale force winds that have dumped all
that snow from the surrounding open fields that you can walk on them
without breaking through.

The southern entrance is probably somewhat better with lower drifts and
it probably won't be long until there is a well established path. With
the amount of snow and the way it is packed down, I think there is
little likelihood that the road will reopen again before spring so bring
your hiking boots. It is approximately 1 km from the main road to the
entrance to the woods from either direction.

Once into the woods, that paths are well travelled and marked and the
going is pretty easy.

The Solitaire was a no-show today, Wednesday, despite the efforts of several
observers from 9:00 a.m. until dusk. Small consolation were the Pine
Grosbeaks again seen in the area.

As usual, Kurt Fox is misinterpreting my statements. I never implied that
the Solitaire was easy to find. In fact, a careful reader would realize
that it required patience and perhaps a bit of luck to see this bird. My
statements about looking in the tops of bare trees and listening for its
song were so that an observer could improve his/her odds of finding it, as
that is how it was usually found. Oh, and I did point out, Kurt, that
looking during the heavy snows had proven fruitless for virtually everyone,
including you.

At Buffalo Harbor today, Brendan Klick and Don Harris refound the Forster's
Tern in the channel beyond Times Beach. When I went there for the tern, I
had an immature Black-legged Kittiwake instead.

Good birding!
Willie

Happy New Year, Ontbirds People,

A few months back (late October, I believe), we posted a message entitled
"Sparrow City", re: the phenomenal #'s and variety of sparrow species in the
Ottawa area.....well, it seems that Ottawa is "Sparrow City" again - but
this time in late winter, which is even more amazing!

As of today (Jan. 2, 2002), a FOX SPARROW was seen by Mike Tate in the Jack
Pine Trail Parking Lot (a first occurrence for this species in January in
Ottawa!). This bird was 1st reported by Richard Brouillet on Jan. 1st. The
SAVANNAH SPARROW reported by Tony Beck on Dec. 28 & subsequently seen by
many others is still visiting the feeders regularly at 170 Oakridge Blvd.
(in the company of a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER...the Savannah Sparrow is also a
new record for Ottawa in January). A VESPER SPARROW was seen by Paul Jones
on Dec. 30 along Trail Road near the landfill site in the company of a group
of DARK-EYED JUNCO's. The SWAMP SPARROW in the ditch behind the NRC
buildings between Montreal Rd. & Bathgate Rd. was last reported on Dec. 22
(Mike Tate, Bob Bracken, Chris Lewis & m . obs; 1st discovered by Kim
Zbitnew on the Ottawa-Hull CBC Dec 16). A SONG SPARROW was reported by J.
P. Cheff from the High Falls Conservations area in Casselman on Dec.
29......but apparently local birders don't need to go to Casselman to see a
Song Sparrow for their winter list - Mark Gawn today reported a Song Sparrow
trapped inside the Home Depot on Woodroffe Ave. just east of Baseline Rd.
WHITE-THROATED & WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS are continuing to visit many local
feeders.....and if SNOW BUNTINGS count as "Sparrows" in your books.....well,
we got them too! Large numbers of Snow Buntings were seen today (m. obs.)
in the area of Brownlee Rd. off Eagleson Rd......we're still looking for
Lapland Longspurs!

As most of these birds may be of local interest only, we respectfully
request that anyone wishing directions please e-mail us privately at
weewa@primus.ca

Thanks & Happy Sparrows,
Chris Lewis & Bob Bracken

Hi again, Ontbirds People,

Not important, but I just realized that our "sparrow report" from Ottawa was
not complete... There are a good number of AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS at feeders
as well as in fields with weeds & seeds throughout the area. This species
was low in number on the Ottawa / Hull CBC, but they're definitely still
around, and it would be a disrespectful to leave them out of our "sparrow
summary".

I watched the Mississauga Townsend's Solitaire this morning (Thurs.Jan.3)
from 9:04 a.m. till 9:10 a.m. and then briefly again at 9:14 a.m. Initially
it was perched about 5 feet from the top of the dead spruce tree and later,
on the very top.

DIRECTIONS:
Walk about 50 feet into the parkette and look to the east for 3 tall spruce
trees, the bird perches on the top of the dead tree in the middle. An even
better look at these three trees can be had from Hickling Ct. (One street
east of the parkette).
>From the Hwy 401 exit at Winston Churchill Boulevard, proceed south to
Derry Road (about 2km). Turn right (west) on Derry Road and at the next
light turn left (south) onto Danton Promenade. Proceed to the end of this
short street at a T-junction with Vanderbilt Road. Directly in front of you
is the entrance to Plumtree Park.

Hello Birders,

I'm sorry I am sending this a day late. During my day at Point Pelee I found
some noteworthy birds. We found a MERLIN resting on a tree branch at the
tip, also a NORTHERN HARRIER, RED TAILED and SHARP SHINNED HAWKS which were
also at the tip. We also found a AMERICAN PIPIT walking on the western part
of the tips beach and a KILLDEER. Walking a little ways down on the beach
their was a gigantic group of ducks of maybe over 10,000. They were to far
to view with my binoculars, but a man I met along the beach said their were
some EIDERS and SCOTERS in their but did not know what kind, unfortunately I
could not see them. Although I did get a good look at a little group coming
close to shore. It was made up of LESSER and GREATER SCAUP, RING NECKED
DUCKS, and REDHEADS. Overall it was a good day.

Directions: From Windsor: Take Highway 3 and then turn at County Road 45.
Turn Left at County Road 18 and then hang a right at Pelee Drive and go
straight.

Good Birding,

Windsor, Ontario
Corey Reeves

At noon today I saw a flock of about 26 turkeys in a field on the east
side of Durham 23. The location is 1.6 km. south of the junction of
York 21/Durham 12 with Durham 23. That's 2 km. east of Pefferlaw, 11
west of Cannington.

The general location is 100 km. northeast of downtown Toronto.

Hi everyone,
Due to the number of requests, I thought that I would post the information
that the STILT has not been seen since late Wenesday morning. If anyone can
dispute that claim, please let us know. It certainly has been a big
newsmaker, as the finder of the bird has been interviewed by newspaper,
radio, and television the past couple of days. There is an article in
today's issue of the National Post on page 5. As well, a segment is
supposed to be on CTV News at 6 this evening.
Just in case, here are directions again:
Directions: From highway 40 which runs between Sarnia and Chatham, find
Wallaceburg. Take it (40) west from 'Burg and follow it to where it turns
north. Head two concessions north to Langstaff Line and turn left.
Follow this a few kilometres to its west end and you are at the Snye River.
Turn right onto St. Clair Parkway (RD 33) and go about 1 km or less. You
are
along the Snye and Walpole Island is on the far shore.
OR: From highway 40 north (Sarnia), follow
south to Port Lambton turnoff (Rd. 1) and follow to the village. Turn left
at the St. Clair River and follow 2.5 concessions south, a little past the
Chatham-Kent border sign. You will see a sign for Snye-View Orchards (on
left), and it is a little south of there. (Or follow St. Clair Parkway all
the way south from Sarnia to just past the Chatham-Kent border). The bird
is on
the Walpole side of the river (west), feeding along the edge. It may hide
behind cattails at times.

Just before noon The Northern Hawk Owl was on the north side of Wellington
County Road 8
"(this road changes into Perth Line 91 past Perth Road 140) between Perth
Road 140 and Sideroad 6 (west of Drayton)". It was at the top of a

car and perched in a small roadside tree on the north side of the road.

I observed a Turkey Vulture sitting in a tree this afternoon at 4:40 very
near County Road 26 (Mandaumin Sideroad).

>From Highway 402, take the Mandaumin exit south towards Highway 22. About
1/2 way between the 402 and Hwy. 22, there is a row of smallish trees on the
east side of the road. The TV was sitting in the tree closest to the road.

OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - JAN 01 2002 AT 7:00 PM

              ******************************
Transcriber's Note: On Jan 01, 2002 the historic city of Hull was
amalgamated with surrounding municipalities to form a new city of
Gatineau. The birding geography has not changed.
              ********************************

This is Chris Lewis reporting. Many great and late winter birds
have been reported from the area. A very late Great Blue Heron was
seen flying along Eagleson Rd in the Bridlewood area on December 29
but no other water birds have been reported here recently.

The Ottawa River is finally starting to freeze and gulls are
starting to concentrate along the ice edges. Five gull species were
seen on December 31 at the Trail Rd landfill including several
Glaucous and Iceland Gulls.

Two Bald Eagles, 1 Northern Goshawk and 7 Rough-legged Hawks were
seen along Steel Line Rd along the Eardley escarpment in Quebec and
another Northern Goshawk was observed on the 29th flying over River
Rd between Kanata and Dunrobin.

Two Peregrine Falcons were on the Coates Building at Tunney's
Pasture on the 30th and another Peregrine was on the Ottawa Board of
Education Tower on the 28th.

The Snowy Owl on Russell Rd, north of Russell, was still present on
December 30th.

The CAROLINA WRENS at 26 Furlong Cres in Kanata and 868 Acadian Dr
in Orleans are still coming to both these locations and the male
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER seems to be a fixture at 695 Goldenline Rd
near Carleton Place.

A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was reported from the parking lot at Jack
Pine Trail along Moodie Dr today.

Up to 5 BOREAL CHICKADEES were discovered on River Rd on December
30. They were heard and seen feeding in the spruce trees along the
edges of the marsh along River Rd. BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported
earlier last week along the trail that runs west off River Rd. A
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was also seen along the River Rd trail on
the 29th. This is always a great area to visit for special winter
birds.

Both the Brown Thrasher and the Hermit Thrush were still alive and
well on December 30. The Thrasher is at the feeder on Hilda Ave
near Shirley's Bay and the thrush is at the Ottawa Duck Club feeder
on the Fourth Line Rd at Riddell Rd.

A Savannah Sparrow and a Yellow-rumped Warbler have been regular at
the feeders in the backyard of 170 Oak Ridge Blvd in Nepean. The
sparrow seems to be more regular and the warbler less regular but
both are incredibly late occurrences for both species in Ottawa.

A Vesper Sparrow, another late bird for Ottawa, was reported on the
30th, associating with Dark-eyed Juncos along Trail Rd near the
landfill site. Five juncos and 2 Tree Sparrows were seen in the
area but the Vesper Sparrow was not seen yesterday.

A report of a Fox Sparrow in the Jack Pine Trail parking lot comes
from today at noon and going back to the 29th, a Song Sparrow was
found at the High Falls Conservation area in Casselman.

Small numbers of Bohemian Waxwings and Evening Grosbeaks and good
numbers of Common Redpolls continue to be reported throughout the

Karen and I had 2 HOARY REDPOLLS at the feeder today. One was quite
pale with some faint, broken streaking on the breast, and a pure white
rump. The black patch below the chin on this one seemed quite small
compared to the COMMONS. Couldn't make out any difference in the bills.

The second one had even less breast streaking, and a pure white rump and
back right to the base where there appeared to be a single dark spot. I
couldn't make out whether that was a spot on the rump or one of the
darker tail feathers showing through. It had a much larger facial mask
than the other but the bill on this one seemed much less prominent than
on the COMMONS.

Both these birds sat in such a way as to make the white back and rump
prominent by the way they held their wings.

This seemed to be part of quite a dramatic increase in the numbers
today. We've had a few at our feeder and it wasn't uncommon to see
small flocks of about 6 flying overhead. Today they seemed to be
everywhere with flocks of 10-30 at just about every feeder around Bath,
and one flock of over 100. We had a flock of 30-40 at our feeder at one
time as well.

Bath is about 20 km west of Kingston and 3 km west of the Millhaven
Ferry dock to Amherst Island.

At 7:00pm, Thursday, January 3, 2002, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless
an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

Many local birders were out getting a head start on
their 2002 lists this week. Birds seen in the Hamilton
area include WOOD DUCK at the Desjardins Canal,
PEREGRINE FALCON in downtown Hamilton, AMERICAN
KESTREL over Delta Highschool, EASTERN MEADOWLARK and
SHORT-EARED OWL in Stoney Creek, WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL and PINE SISKIN at a feeder on Secord Lane
in Burlington, KING EIDERS on the lakeshore in Stoney
Creek, plus BALD EAGLE and GREATER BLACK-BACKED GULL
at Woodland Cemetery.

At the RBG, FOX SPARROW, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN
ROBIN, PURPLE FINCH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD, and NORTHERN FLICKER were present in the
Hopkin's Tract, a KILLDEER was on the mudflats in the
Marsh, while a pair each of TUFTED TITMOUSE and
CAROLINA WREN were found on the Captain Cootes Trail
near the Nature Centre.

Out of town, a pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS have been
regular visitors to Port Credit Harbour, a wintering
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was found on Campbellville Road
just east of Milburough Line near Mountsberg
Conservation Area, and TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES are still
present in Mississauga and across the border in
Niagara County, New York.

A trip to the north shore of Lake Erie proved
rewarding with sightings of BALD EAGLE, SNOWY OWL,
COMMON MERGANSER, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and TUNDRA SWAN
near the Nanticoke Generating Station.

Birders looking for the NORTHERN HAWK OWL, which can
still be easily found near Drayton, also reported
seeing SHORT-EARED OWL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SNOW
BUNTING and NORTHERN SHRIKE in the same area.

Thanks to everyone for a flood of reports this week.
Be sure to keep letting us know about your sightings.
Leave your name, telephone number, as well as the time
and date of your call. Sightings can also be reported
by E-mail.

GOOD BIRDING!

I have received no reports, either positive or negative, about the Solitaire
today, Thursday. If you go for this bird, PLEASE POST YOUR RESULTS! It is
important to know that the bird is not being seen also.

Good birding!

Hello Ontbirders,

The ice in the small bays along the eastern Toronto waterfront is creating
perfect conditions to see white-winged gulls. Today Theresa Dobko, Liz
Green and I went to Polson Street, Unwin Avenue, and Ashbridges Bay. We
studied the gulls on the ice and in flight just metres away in most cases.

Kumlien's Iceland Gulls: 7 adult, 1 juvenile/first winter, 1 second winter
Glaucous Gulls: 2 adult, 1 second/third winter
Thayer's Gull: 1 adult at Ashbridges Bay

Directions
Polson Street. From Yonge and Lake Shore Blvd, take Lake Shore Blvd east to
Cherry Street. Turn right on Cherry. Polson is the first street off Cherry
on right.

Unwin Avenue. Continue on south on Cherry to Unwin, turn left and turn
right on Regatta Road. At end of parking lot walk east to water's edge, or
park in pulloff on Unwin west of the metal bridge.

Ashbridges Bay. Take Lake Shore Blvd east past the sewage treatment plant.
Turn right into Ashbridges Bay Park, then right again to the boat ramps.
