I saw the male Piping Plover just beyond the snow fence at the far end of
Beach 1 at Wasaga Beach today (Saturday June 4, 1 PM). There was a small
group of volunteer plover wardens standing guard and explaining the reason
for the closure of the far end of Beach 1 to "civilian" beach goers. They
are also keeping track of sightings for park management (who no doubt have
to justify keeping part of the beach closed off). I was lucky and saw the
bird within minutes of arrival but it had apparently not been seen
previously in the day. This could be because I brought a scope and the
wardens did not. After about 20 minutes on view the bird disappeared from
sight and I left. This is in a Provincial Park and there is a $12 admission.
Nancy Murphy's directions:
Wasaga Beach can be reached by going west out of Elmvale on Hwy 92. Follow
into Main St., turn right and follow to main beach area, just over the
bridge, turn right and park in Beach 1 parking area. Walk down to the beach
and you will see the snow fenced area with signs posted.
