Cranberry Marsh, southwest Whitby, Ontario
Daily Raptor Counts: Nov 23, 2007 --31 total (see table below)
Observation time: 9am to 1pm
Official Counter: Doug Lockrey
Observers: Alan Woods, Jerry Ball, Jim McKnight, Jim Skene, Anne Anthony
(back from seeing over 400 birds in Ethiopia), Jim Fairchild (great to see
him recovering), Karl Jennewein
Weather: very cold (-10C, "warming" to -4C), rising BP, light, then medium
NW winds;TUV=2
Observations: We enjoyed a 10-minute battle royale over the wetlands, as a
male Northern Harrier did not like the presence of a Peregrine Falcon; then
a Sharp-shinned Hawk elected to "take it out" on Jim McK. as it swooped from
behind very low, ticking Jim's shoulder as it doubled back to perch.
Non-raptor Observations: Some of the following will be "wanted" by upcoming
winter bird-listers":
1 C.Redpoll, several Am.pipits, golden-crowned kinglet, red-breasted
nuthatch, hairy woodpecker, cedar waxwings, tagged Trumpeter Swan,
red-winged blackbirds, white-throated sparrow, fox sparrow, swamp sparrow,
song sparrow, juncos and tree sparrows, imm. northern shrike, among others.
