THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:00 pm, SUNDAY DECEMBER 2, 2007.
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Winter appears to have settled in early this year, with temperatures well
below normal on recent days, and it looks like the snow is here to stay. Few
bird reports came in, but of local interest were the following:
The last report of the SLATY-BACKED GULL at the Ottawa Valley Waste
Management Centre south of Pembroke was on November 27th. A few
Iceland and Glaucous Gulls were still here on the 28th and a Golden Eagle
flew over, but unless future reports are received, "The" gull seems to be gone.
Thirteen Wild Turkeys were seen along Flewellyn Rd. near Conley Rd. on the
29th, and a late Great Blue Heron was in a ditch west of the Home Depot on
Strathmore Rd. in Barrhaven the same day. Peregrine Falcon sightings came
from Remic rapids on the Ottawa River and the R. H. Coats building at Tunney's
pasture last week, and one was also on the roof of the Ottawa
Civic Hospital on the 27th. A Merlin was checking out the bird feeders on
Hilda Rd. by Shirley's Bay on December 1st, and reports of Bohemian
Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls continue to come in from
many locations, including the Fletcher Wildlife Garden at the Central
Experimental Farm. The Fletcher continues to host a male OREGON JUNCO as
of the 2nd, most recently seen at the bird feeders behind building #138.
And, last but not least the first seasonal report of Lapland Longspurs came
from the 29th when 3 were seen on Akins Rd. near Eagleson Rd.
Thank you - Good Birding!
