Hi everyone
Spent the afternoon birding with my son Ben along the Ottawa River
checking the remaining open water at Deschenes and Remic Rapids and along
the Rideau River at the Rideau Tennis Club and Billings Bridge. Overall, it
was rather quiet with lower numbers of goldeneyes than a few days ago. We
did managed to have great views of the male Barrow's Goldeneye along the
Rideau River opposite the Rideau Tennis Club. This was a "lifer" for Ben. It
was associating with a flock of 30+ Common goldeneyes. Also present was a
female Common Goldeneye with a yellowish-orange coloured bill.
Other late lingering waterfowl included 6 Canada Geese, 2 at Deschenes
and 4 at Remic Rapids, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 1 White-winged Scoter, 2
Bufflehead and 1 Common Loon at Deschenes Rapids. We also had a number of
small flocks, 30+ of Bohemian Waxwings along the Ottawa River Parkway.
                                                            good birding,
Bruce & Ben

Directions: From Ottawa take 417 east to the Vanier Parkway and exit north.
Follow parkway to Donald Street and turn left (west) and continue to River
Road. Turn left on River Rd. and then right on Olga St. which is a dead end.
Park and walk over to the open area of water along the Rideau River. There
are a small number of Common Goldeneye's and lots of Mallards. If you
require additional information, please email me privately.
