Today, I found an excellent location for Pine Grosbeaks on Concession St E.,
about 150 yards East of Bragg Rd (east of Bowmanville).
There is an apple orchard on the north side of Concession St which includes
three complete rows of small crab apples.
There is enough food here to feed a large flock for a month. There were
dozens of Grosbeaks and many bright males. Also many with russet plumage.
On the next E/W road north, which is Concession Rd 3, I found twelve
Bluebirds (on the move), and a mixed flock of 60 Waxwings (16 Bohemian).
If anyone knows why an orchard would include rows of crab apples, please let
me know. Cross-pollination? Attracts more bees?
Highway 401 exit 435 (Bennett Rd) is the quickest way from Toronto. North
to Hwy 2, east to Bragg Rd, and north on Bragg Rd to Concession St E.
