Pine Grosbeaks, Eastern Bluebirds, Peregrine Falcon, NE of Bowmanville

The Pine Grosbeaks were still present near Bowmanville, as reported by Rick Lauzon on Dec. 26. A flock of about 45 birds, mostly females / immatures but including some males, was seen on the north side of Concession St. East. The birds were also seen to the south of the road. At times they were perched very high. An adult Peregrine Falcon ripped through at ~1:45 pm, then flew off eastward and landed, to perch for an extended period. A local resident noted that “it’s always around.” A Sharp-shinned Hawk was also present.

Driving north one concession, I searched thoroughly along Concession Road 3 for the Bohemian Waxwings, but had no luck. The Eastern Bluebirds were still present. Ten birds, including at least 6 males, were seen 2.3 km west of Bragg Road, on the north side of Concession Road 3. They perched on the utility wires, on the fence posts, and landed on the ground to the west.

Directions: (from Rick Lauzon) Pine Grosbeaks & Peregrine Falcon:Highway 401, exit 435 (Bennett Rd), go North to Hwy 2, east 0.8 km to Bragg Rd, north on Bragg Rd 2 km to Concession St E., then go east 150 metres.Eastern Bluebirds:Return to Bragg Road and go north 2 km to Concession Road 3, turn left and go west 2.3 km, past Lambs Road, to just past Soper Creek. The birds were seen between there and Mearns Ave.

Good birding!
