this afternoon I spent 4 1/2 watching the NHO in Stoney Creek, along the railway tracks., we watched it hunt for several hours, and it was not successful.
Barry Cherriere, a few birders, and photogs and I were pleased when we saw the bird fall back on a previous capture of a "white mouse", and eat it while we watched. Interestingly enough, the bird found the former prey too frozen to consume, it move to a more protected perch in the tree, out of the cold wind... it huddled over the icy lunch for about 1/2 hour, then proceeded to finish off its meal.
The owl seemed content with its meal, and relaxed on the perch for another few ours until dusk when I left. I was able to get a good angle on the bird in some nice late afternoon light for a shot, here in this gallery below. (2 images, same shot, different edits)

Please note... I talked to a railway official, and he warned me that anyone caught on railway property is subject to a $5,000.00 fine... if they wanted to be nasty, and at this point, there is no reason to be too concerned, as they seem to respect the opportunity for people to see this bird., just please be careful and aware especially when there are children around.
All things considered, there are a lot more important issues going on in our great country then a bird with a few free mice. Take care of whats important.
Happy New Year to all.
