[Ontbirds]Ottawa:Barrow's Goldeneye, Hoary Redpoll, Pine Grosbeak & Bohemiain Waxwing

Hi Ontbirders
    Yesterday, January 2nd, spent most of the day birding around the Ottawa 
area. Despite the cold temperatures there was still lots of activity around 
feeders, Trail Road Landfill site and the Ottawa River. At least 1 Hoary 
Redpoll was still present in a flock of 50+ Common Redpolls at 4544 
Torbolton Ridge Road around 11:00am. Along Huntmar Road at the Carp River 
Bridge there was a flock of 75+ Bohemian Waxwings.
    At Remic Rapids a male Barrow's Goldeneye was observed near the lookout 
while a female Long-tailed Duck was observed feeding in the rapids at the 
south end of the bridge. Two adult Peregrine Falcons were roosting on the 
south side of the Coats Building near the corner of Holland Ave. and Scott 
St. A early afternoon visit to the Trail Road Landfill Site produced 1 adult 
Lesser Black-backed, 20+ Glaucous, 7 Iceland, 250+ Great Black-backed and 
600+ Herring Gulls. There is no access to the landfill site but you must 
view the gulls from Trail Road just south of the landfill site entrance. On 
January 1st, the female Harlequin Duck was observed at the north end of the 
Champlain Bridge and 3 (1M,2F) Bufflehead were seen at Deschenes Rapids. The 
Gray Catbird was still present yesterday. If you require additional

Directions: Hoary Redpoll: Torbolton Ridge parallels the Dunrobin Rd, which 
is a couple of roads over to the east. Take the 417 west and exit at March 
Rd in Kanata. Go for 8 km or so, then turn right onto the Dunrobin Rd. 
Several kms further down turn left onto the Kinburn Side Rd to get to 
Torbolton.

Directions: Harlequin Duck: Champlain Bridge is the north "extension" of
Island ParkDrive, which can be accessed from the 417 coming from the east 
(downtown);from the west, exit at Carling, then turn north (left) on 
Merivale and north
again (left) on Island Park. At the north (Quebec) end of the Champlain
Bridge, turn right on Lucerne and park about 100 metres down (there's space
at the side of the road to do so). Take the path south to the edge of the
river, exiting left from the main path (a bike path in summer) in order to
take a secondary path  near a small  gray house-like structure.
     Directions: Barrow's Goldeneye: The Champlain Bridge parking lot can be
reached by taking Parkdale Ave. north from Hwy. 417 in Ottawa to the Ottawa
River Parkway. Follow parkway west passed Remic Rapids Lookout (closed
during winter) and continue west towards Island Park Drive. Just before the 
lights
at Island Park Drive there is a parking area on your right. Park and walk
east to Remic Rapids.

 Dechenes Rapids: Follow Island Park Drive north and cross the Champlain 
Bridge. Turn left onto Lucerne Blvd. and follow to Vanier Road. Turn left on 
Vanier Road and follow to the rapids and turn right. Scan the upper rapids

Direction:Trail Road Landfill Site: (from downtown Ottawa): Take Hwy 417 
west to Hwy 416.  South on the 416 to exit 66 (Fallowfield Rd.) Right (west) 
on Fallowfield to Moodie Dr.  Left (south) on Moodie to Trail Rd. Turn left 
and follow Trail Road past entrance and watch for new dumping area.
***PLEASE NOTE*** -  do NOT cross the fence. This is private property, and 
most of the gulls can be well-viewed from the road.

Directions: Gray Catbird: From Ottawa travel west bound on Hwy. 417 to the
March Rd./Eagleson Road and exit right onto March Rd. Follow to Dunrobin 
Road and turn right  continuing northwest  through Woodlawn. At the hill 
turn right
onto Constance Bay Rd following it for approx. 1.5 km. Turn left on Allbirch
Road and drive 1.3 km to the " T "  intersection. Turn left on Bishop Davis
Drive and then right on Bayview Drive.  Follow Bayview Drive to Spinnaker
Way, turn right and then first right on Goodin St. They are at 114 Goodin.
