THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:30pm, SUNDAY JANUARY 6, 2008
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
During the first week of the "New Birding Year" in Ottawa, most of the really
interesting birds seen in our area at the end of 2007 were kind enough to
stick around for 2008.
On the Ottawa River 2 female HARLEQUIN DUCKS, at least one Long-tailed
Duck, a Bufflehead, a male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a hybrid
Common X BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were still present on the 6th, in various
locations from Remic rapids through to Deschenes rapids, and a female
Red-breasted Merganser was seen at Remic rapids on the 5th. The
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was still on Old Carp Road on the 5th, and the
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Parkwood Hills, the Tufted Titmouse in Forest Park,
Embrun, and a HOARY REDPOLL in the Shirley's Bay area are still being seen on
a regular basis as of the 6th. A Hermit Thrush discovered back on Dec. 16th
was seen again near the Hurdman Bridge along the Rideau River on Jan.
6th, the Gray Catbird in Constance Bay was still present as of the 2nd, and
a Northern Mockingbird that was reported last fall was seen again in the
same area along the railroad tracks south of Parkside Cr. on Jan. 5th and
6th. The OREGON JUNCO at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden was still visiting both
of the Fletcher feeders on the 6th as well.
A large flock of approx. 70 Wild Turkeys was seen on the 6th near Herzberg
and Carling Ave. and on the same day a pair of adult Bald Eagles was seen
perched together on the DND property at Shirley's Bay - the same location
where a pair was seen early last year. On the 6th , a juvenile Northern
Goshawk was seen at the Rideau River south of the Tennis Club. On the 2nd
and 5th, a pair of Peregrine Falcons was roosting on the R.H. Coats building
at Tunney's Pasture and a single Peregrine was seen at Remic rapids on the
6th. Gulls on the Rideau River north of the Hurdman bridge on the 5th
included an adult THAYER'S GULL, and a few Iceland Gulls were seen along
with several Glaucous Gulls both here and on the Ottawa River this past
week. Three Snowy Owls were in the Ste-Rose area east of Casselman on
the 6th and a Barred Owl was still present on March Valley Rd. on the same
day.
Northern Shrikes were again reported from several locations, and there were
a couple of reports of Lapland Longspurs with groups of Snow Buntings this
week - one along March Valley Rd. at the Duck Club feeders near Klondike
Rd. on the 3rd and 5th, and 3 along Ste-Rose Rd. east of Casselman on the
5th. It almost goes without saying now that Bohemian Waxwings, Pine
Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls are still being reported in good numbers
all over our area.
Thank you - Good Birding!
