Hello:

I had a female American Three-toed Woodpecker behind my place in Sault Ste.
Marie this afternoon. I have been suspicious that one was around as I have
noted a lot of fresh scaling. This is the second winter in a row I have had
Three-toeds with 3 different birds early last winter. I also have a couple
of very reliable Boreal Chickadees coming to my feeders along with an
irregular Hoary Redpoll also seen today. It is very quiet around the Soo
with virtually no owls or raptors other than the usual Bald Eagles and
Red-tailed Hawks at the Landfill. Rough-legged Hawks usually easy to find at
this time of year are virtually nonexistent. A few more gulls than usual are
hanging around the river and Sault Landfill with 2-2 winter and 2 -1st
winter Kumlien's Gulls and the usual selection of Glaucous Gulls. No
Gyrfalcon reports locally but one has been hanging out down in Marquette, MI
since before Christmas.

If anyone is in the area and wants to drop by to look for the Woodpecker
just drop me an E-mail and I can supply directions.

Kirk Zufelt
