Yesterday a Belted Kingfisher flew across Kawartha Lakes 35 just south
of the hamlet of Victoria Road. There is open water all around the
village in Grass Creek, which flows out of Mitchell Lake in the
Trent-Severn system. Only one pair of Canada Geese seen here so far.
Finches are moving: no Pine Grosbeaks have been seen in two days,
from a flock of 10 that's been here all winter. The first small red
finch was seen today, apparently a House Finch although only Purple
Finches occurred all last year. Of the 50 or so Redpolls that have been
feasting here since December, only a single one has been seen in the
last two days. After an almost complete absence of Goldfinches since
the beginning of the year, a single patchy yellow male showed up today.
And three crows have taken to breakfasting under the feeders.
Victoria Road (hamlet) is in the City of Kawartha Lakes, a mile
north of highway 48, about 7 km. east of Kirkfield, and 150 km.
northeast of downtown Toronto. The feeders are at 14 Richmond St. West.
