Birders,

En route to Rondeau, Norm Murr & I headed to Port Rowan as I wanted to see the immature Little Blue Heron, but to no avail. We did a thorough scan of the pond and the small slough/pond just south of the main one. This was at about 8pm and with the rain/cloud it was quite dark. As we were about to leave we saw a large shorebird (that wasn't there 10 minutes earlier) and I immediately said "Willet" and sure enough the bird opened it's wings a bit and showed the strong black & white pattern, it then gave it's deep throaty call to confirm.

Nice consolation bird after missing the heron (which could still be there because it may be roosting elsewhere), I.e. The main marsh or the more hidden/secluded "Buttonbush Marsh" just south of the open pond.

Regards & good birding,
Frank Pinilla

DIRECTIONS:
Heading south & then west on Hwy 24 out of Simcoe, turn left at Hwy 59 towards Long Point, at the Esso Station (59 & Front Rd) turn left and about 300m you will see the pond and Bird Studies Canada building.
